• Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States.

• Colon cancer causes ~ 60,000 deaths annually.

• Over 90% of all colon cancers occur in people over the age of 40 years old.

• After 40 years old the risk of colon cancer doubles every ten years.

• Colon cancer is preventable.

• The best step to prevent colon cancer is a screening exam

• Colonoscopy is the best screening exam.  It is a very safe procedure with complications occuring in less than 1% of patients.

• Colonoscopy allows the entire colon to be visually examined.  Polyps can be visualized and removed at the same time.
